Reverse Light Swich Removal, Test & Re-Fit
OK, my Astra 1.6 (X16XE) is now up for an MOT and has that common fault of the brake lights not working. So first things first I check the obvious and the light tracks are removed to check bulbs....all OK, now fuse box.....all OK......Now google "Astra Reverse Switch Location". One picture comes up in images and it's for a 2.0L.
So I set off and jack up the motor and remove the near side wheel, as this is obviously the side that the gear box is located. the switch on mine is on the front of the gear box and can be located on the left of the discs just under the battery conpartment.
To get to the switch I removed the wheel and jacked up the car up to get underneath, I later realised that it was not actaully necessary as access from above (under the bonnet FINAL IMAGE) is adequate.
As you can see from the pic below the location of the switch is left of the discs.

This is a closer up shot of the wire going to the switch, once the wire is removed the switch is an hexaganol 19mm bolt head which is turned anti clockwise for removal.
Two close up pics of the switch, don't loose the washer!!!!!!! (pictured above)
Before buying a new switch be sure to check that it's actually the problem. Turn over the engine and loop the two connectors using a hair pin or similar and ask someone to check to see if the reverse lights come on!!! Mine did so I know it's the connector.
Now refitting is the reversal of removal, remember just nip tight the new switch, below is the location of the switch from above the engine bay.
