The dreaded EGR Valve
OK so whats an EGR Valve, well.....It's a valve that simply opens and closes to let already burned exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber...Why? The less gases that come out of the back of the car (due to gas re-circulation) the lower the Co2 emmisions will be. Lower Co2 emissions = lower taxes, however......most Vauxhalls naturally burn a lot of oil (about 1Ltr per 1000 mls) this burnt oil creates a build up of carbons and it is these carbons that clog up the valve. Unfortunately the valves in the petrol units do not respond well to servicing and a new unit or blanking off is required.
EGR Valve Failiure Symptoms
EGR Valve failures usually result with very similar symtoms, people report increased fuel consumption and even higher revs. But the most common complaint is a jerky car which Kangaroo's violently. Unfortunately a failing EGR valve acan also cause the engine to stall, this is usually when the car is slowing down from speed and can be extremely dangerous.
Removing your EGR Valve
OK so there it is, before you attempt to remove it I'd always advise you undo the negative from the Battery (ensure you have the CD/radio code if you are to do this), then undo the power cable going to the valve. Using a star bit and socket (you will need a good set, Drapers are around £7.00) undo the 2 bolts holding in the Valve (note which way around the gasket is as one side as edges). Now remove the valve. Fit the new valve by placing in the new gasket and tightening up the two star bolts, refit the electrical cable, battery and you're done.
